Hver sommer kommer udenlandsdanskeren Jørgen sammen med sin kone hjem til Danmark. Her mødes de med Birgitte, Peter og deres søn Thomas, som har et sommerhus i nærheden. Jørgen og Thomas har noget tilfælles, og efter de andre er gået i seng, går de en tur på stranden, hvor Jørgen konfronterer Thomas og spørger, hvorfor han er så trist. Thomas vil have en hemmelighed til gengæld for sin egen. De afslører hver deres hemmelighed, og det får store konsekvenser for de efterfølgende somre og for deres indbyrdes forhold.
En dreng skal opereres. Mens han venter på operationen bliver han optaget af Afdeling Ds øvrige patienter og ansatte – en døende mand og en mystisk læge. Sammen med dem lærer han noget om døden. Og på mærkværdig vis finder drengen og den døende mand ud af, at de måske har mere tilfælles end først antaget.

På et krydstogtskib fyldt med ensomme mennesker arbejder Emmalou som tjener. Hun sørger over tabet af sin kæreste, som omkom i en ulykke et år tidligere. En udklædt lille dreng stiger en dag på skibet og forsøger at få kontakt med Emma-lou. Deres møde er med til at skubbe Emmalou i gang med et nyt kapitel i hendes liv.
