Tobias (b. 1993) engaged with filmmaking during his high-school years and kept the film dream alive at the European Film College.
Then, anxiety about the whole filmmaking endeavor set in, sending him on a detour through a Master’s degree in Film and Media Studies and a warehouse job packing many keyboards into many boxes. With academics out of the way, Tobias allowed himself to take the film dream seriously and applied to Super16 one last time with a newfound calm.
Anxiety still shows its face, partly in worries about the future and especially in the imagined ways others might perceive him (e.g., in a given self-presentational text). But Tobias has realized that his anxiety is also a strength. It has given him a sharp eye for social dynamics, which often appears in his screenplays, where dysfunctional relationships tend to take center stage -- often seasoned with humor and/or something supernatural.
In addition, Tobias’ work is driven by the social and cultural currents running beneath everything, and he hopes to contribute to broader representation in the film industry in general. He tries to do this without coming across as self-righteous, though he finds this difficult when he feels the need to articulate the need not to come across as self-righteous.
